Two Pieces of the Legal Interpreting Puzzle: Depositions and Guilty Pleas

This workshop will provide a theoretical overview of a commonly interpreted civil legal setting – the deposition. The purpose of depositions in civil settings will be explained and discussed. The roles of the deposition interpreter and the table interpreter will be examined. Discussions and practical application of consecutive interpretation and notetaking will be addressed. Participants will interpret portions of a mock deposition which will be filmed for discussion purposes. Participants will engage in peer review and discussion of their interpreting work. Language of the workshop will be in ASL. No interpretation provided.

Lunch: 1hr lunch each day. Lunch is on your own.

Understanding the Guilty Plea for ASL Court Interpreters November 18, 2018 9-4p

This workshop will define the constitutional principles underlying the guilty plea, one of the most commonly interpreted texts in criminal court. Discussions will center around the expectations unique to the plea and the process that a criminal defendant goes through before a plea is entered on the record. Participants will examine specific terminology in English and ASL which can be expected in plea hearings. Opportunities for hands up practice using local guilty plea forms will be provided with the opportunity for peer reflection and discussion of the work. Language of the workshop will be in ASL. No interpretation provided.

Intended Audience: Certified Deaf Interpreters and ASL/English interpreters who are currently credentialed and working within the courts or those who have a minimum of 20 hours of legal/court training.

Required Equipment: A device (phone, iPad, laptop) to record self during group work for post discussions.

CEUs: 1.2 Legal CEUs (RID and BEI pending)

ADA accommodation requests must be submitted by October 17, 2018.

Prerequisites- participants must satisfy one.

1) Approved at the state/federal level and working in the courts.

2) Texas interpreters must be court approved by TX BEI or be in training with the credentials to stand for the TX BEI Court Interpreter Performance Exam.

3) Deaf Interpreters must have prior court training.

Limited to 20 participants, registration and payment in full must be made to secure a slot. No single day rates are being offered.
